Review for The Second Sleep, Robert Harris
This book started with a bang and when I finished the first chapter I was hooked. Sadly, it went downhill from there. Even though it is set in the future, it felt like it was really in the past. The characters got stale very quickly and there was just not enough motivation for the love interest that developed (I don’t want to give anything away if you haven’t read this yet). I thought the premise of the book was really powerful, but it seemed to just rotate around one moment and really went no farther from there. This future just shows that we grew not at all as a people, and maybe that’s the point. That control and cruelty span generations. And when we start again, well, it isn’t really starting again at all. Hope that isn’t true.
Worth reading? I don’t think so.
