The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
The Guernsey Literary and Potato peel Pie Society
by Marn Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
This book grew on me. It took time to get used to just reading letters. No conventional dialogue or plot. At times it was a bit disjointed but as it went on, I found myself enjoying the voices in the letters, learning about this Island, the plight and ravages of WWII and the characters second hand, through someones letters. Remarkable what was achieved and how whole and satisfying it was. Like finding a hidden box in an attic and upon opening it, a treasure trove of letters is presented. So you blonk down, blow off the dust and travel into their private world. That’s what this book is like. It’s quaint, touching, suspenseful, tragic, sad, brave and leads you into a delicious love story. I was sad when I read the last letter. It’s a book I’ll read again, and maybe not from front to back next time. A gem for beside my bed.
