Breath by Tim Winton
Absolutely fantastic. I just loved this book. The writing is mesmerizing. You eat sleep and breath the characters. There is a subtle tension that slowly grows and the fact that the whole book is a flashback is amazing, just how it is all handled. The writing is pure like a Kesey novel. Rare to find such a work today. I heard about it while listening to an interview, by accident on BBC. Winton was talking about his new book, The Shepherd’s Hut (I have yet to read). I was so taken by how he spoke about masculinity and writing that I went on a search for his work. I bought a a few copies of his older novels in a second hand book store and started with Breath. I think I will read everything I can find by him. What I don’t understand is why he is not more celebrated as a writer on this side of the pond.
Step into the pages of Breath. You will have your breath taken away!
