Novel “Since We Fell”
Dennis Lehane’s novel Since We Fell, is a mouthful. He has tucked a lot of genres into one book, which did make it a bit tricky. Each time I began to identify, things would shift or just disappear. But the characters held you, and you did want to know what happened to them. My But, is that there was a lot going on and even though most threads were gathered, there were lots of loose ones. He could have easily written three separate books. Each one exploring one of the themes in this one, this big mouthful. And the end, well, it felt like he had just had enough, didn’t want to write anymore, figure anything else out. It just ended. I guess I had a pretty good idea where things would go, but not that good. And after investing that much time and energy, hanging in there, I needed at least 50 more pages to satisfy the journey. But, alas, they were not there.
Would I say read this book? Yes, because all books are worth the read. And this one is clever and surprising and rich in parts. But I was let down at the end. I would love to know what you think after reading it. If you give it a go, drop me an email and share your thoughts.
